Raffles College Sydney commended for quality and commitment – AUQA Audit Report shows

Raffles College of Design and Commerce (RCDC) Sydney has just been audited by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA). AUQA is the principal national quality assurance agency in higher education with the responsibility of providing public assurance of the quality of Australia’s universities and other institutions of higher education, and assisting in enhancing the academic quality of these institutions.

The Raffles University (RU) plays a key role in ensuring academic quality in the programmes delivered by all of the colleges of the Raffles Education Corp (REC) network including those offering the degrees of RCDC. Both Raffles University and RCDC are pleased with the results of the audit especially as the teaching staff across the colleges have been praised for their expertise, commitment and quality. From the report:

“The Panel acknowledges the foresight of the College in committing to a rigorous external audit and recognising the potential contribution of audit findings to raising the quality of all aspects of RCDC operations.”

“The Audit Panel members and students were impressed by the quality of teaching staff and the skill, expertise and commitment the teaching staff contribute to the College, particularly in terms of connections with industry.”

“Students reinforced the commitment of staff to their education, and commented that staff are approachable and generous in sharing their expertise and knowledge of the various professions within which they are involved. This included staff at head of school, program director and sessional level.”

“Industry representatives at all three sites were enthusiastic about the quality of the students the College is producing, and are keen to build further linkages...”

Sarah Yang
Personal Financial Consultant
Standard Chartered Bank
Raffles Graduating Class of 2008
Shanghai

We would like to congratulate Sarah and her cohort of Raffes degree graduates for successfully completing their program and gaining employment. We took some time to catch up with her about her experience at Raffles, her current job and her future plans.

Q: Congratulations on your employment with Standard Chartered Bank! Time flies…what do you miss and enjoy most as you think back on the last few years you have spent with Raffles?

A: I really miss the time when I was doing research, preparing and giving the presentation on the Capitaland Business Plan – it was a busy period but a very enriching experience. One of my favourite lecturers then was Mr Martin Liew because he had so much knowledge and experience to share with us. I also remembered how much I have learnt and enjoyed my classes, especially the subject on Investment Management.

Q:  Now that you have started your job at the bank, do you think Raffles had prepared you well for your future?

A: The degree program from Raffles has definitely trained me to be more confident of myself and allowed me to acquire valuable presentation and selling skills. I have gained so much more knowledge and my English has improved tremendously. My logical thinking skills have been sharpened and I am now more capable of making better decisions because of the knowledge and skills that I have.

The environment at Raffles is competitive, but yet so full of creativity. The teachers and students make this place a wonderful place to be in. These are some of the reasons why I had chosen to study here.

Q: So what plans do you have for your future?

A: I want to build up my career and continue to upgrade my knowledge and skills even after my graduation. I am glad to know that the Alumni Association does provide personal development courses to help graduates acquire new knowledge for their jobs even after their graduation. I also look forward to be able to meet other Raffles graduates in the activities and events organized by the Alumni Association.  This way, I can stay connected to my alma mater and other Raffles graduates.

New President of Raffles University Systems

Prof Ron Newman

I am pleased to also announce the appointment from 1 December 2008 of Professor Ron Newman as our new President. Professor Newman joined Raffles University Systems at its establishment and has served in the roles of Vice President and Senior Vice President. His elevation to the new role of President affords us the experience and continuity that is so important to our new institution. Before joining RUS, Professor Newman was Professor and Dean at the University of Sydney and brings with him significant academic management experiences.

Professor Tony Dickson completed his term as the President at the end of November 2008. I am pleased to report that Prof Dickson has accepted our invitation to continue as a member of the Board of Governors. Prof Dickson was instrumental in establishing and developing Raffles University Systems over the past two years. We are indeed grateful to him for his significant contributions and leadership, and deeply appreciative that he will be continuing to share his extensive experiences with us.

Under Professor Newman's leadership, we look forward to the continuing development of Raffles University, focusing on Accreditation, Quality Assurance, and Program and Staff Development for the Colleges of Raffles Education Corporation.
