Academic Advisory Council and Academic Directors Meeting

The Academic Advisory Council (AAC) of Raffles University met with the Academic Directors from various degree teaching colleges on 18 April 2008 with the view to seek feedback on the academic operations at the Associated Colleges. The Council found the meeting with the Academic Directors to be useful and informative. The meeting also served as a good platform for members od the AAC to share information and learn about critical issues felt by the Academic Directors. The Academic Directors left with a better understanding of the issues that are faced by the AAC and at the other sites and they have the support of the AAC in the pursuit of QA in their Associate Colleges.

REC is pleased to announce the rationalization and development of the new Raffles Diploma in Commerce for introduction across the network from July 2008.

The Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Commerce are especially designed programmes that provide students with a broad background in business that covers a range of fundamental business concepts and skills and provides an access point to either level positions in the workplace, or entry into the RU and RCDC Commerce degrees.

The Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Commerce programmes enable students to acquire the thinking skills, understanding knowledge critical to key business functions. Those students on Generalist Advanced Diploma will developa broad understanding of the field of business and management and those on the Specialist Advanced Diploma can choose to specialize in Management, Marketing, Banking and Finance, Tourism and Hospitality. The programme objectives are delivered through lectures, seminars and tutorials and a range of assessmentmethods including research and project work, presentations, written assignments and examinations. The programme is normally studied full-time over 2 years, divided into 8 terms. Students who take a heavier load may complete the following programme in a minimum of 6 terms. Each term normally consists of 10 teaching weeks followed by one-week period of assessment and a further week of providing summative feedback to the student.

External Examiners' Visit for RU Degrees
The External Examiner for the design degree visited the college in Beijing on 7th April 2008 and met up both the teaching staff and the students to review the standard of the RU design degree delivered at the college. the external Examiner was impressed with the standard and achievements of the students.

Meanwhile, the External Examiner for the business degree visited the colleges in Ulaanbaatar, Shanghai and Beijing from 4 to 10 April 2008 though there were no students graduating yet.

External examination is important to the quality assurance systems of Raffles University providing the institution with an external view of its standards and an opportunity to benchmark against other institutions.
